The last person to see University of Pennsylvania student Blaze Bernstein alive was visibly nervous upon being interrogated by police about the mysterious death and had scratches on his hands, The Mercury News reported.
The information comes from an affidavit in the case, which is being investigated as a potential homicide.
The body of Bernstein, 19, was found Tuesday in Borrego Park in Lake Forest, California after the pre-med student went missing more than a week prior on January 2. Sheriff’s officials would not say the condition in which the body was discovered.
“They’re still following up on multiple leads,” said Carrie Braun, an Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman, in a press conference. No arrests have been made in the case.
“We have just learned that the O.C. Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office has confirmed our family’s worst fears and have positively identified our son Blaze’s body,” said Gideon Bernstein, Blaze’s father, in

A North Carolina woman has pled guilty to hiding two of her infants in trash bags underneath her mother’s home. As News and Observer reports, 41-year-old Bridgette Morgan Smith pled guilty for failing to report a death.
Back in 2016, the remains were found when a relative, James Morgan, found two black trash bags under the house while doing cable work. Per the search warrant, he described the contents of the bags as “squishy.” When he looked inside one bag, he “recognized that it contained remains of something once living.”
Authorities found the remains of two infants. They were wrapped in separate trash bags, with towels around the remains.
Smith’s mother told authorities that her daughter battled a drug addiction her entire life, including meth and cocaine. She believes that Smith had been pregnant 10 times, although she could only account for three children. According to her, Smith would do things like abandon her newborn

An elderly Indiana pastor was arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted young children at his church, the Rushville Baptist Temple, Fox59 reported.
The investigation into Garry Evans, 72, began in early September after a 3-year-old girl allegedly told her mother that the pastor had made her touch his penis, according to court documents. It is not clear if Evans has entered a plea at this time.
After the mother reported the incident to authorities, police interviewed the girl, who told them that Evans had brought her into his office under the pretense of giving her candy.
Once they were behind closed doors, the girl said, Evans pulled down his pants, made the girl touch his penis, and then asked her not to tell anyone about what had occurred.
Officers searched the church on Sept. 22. As rumors of the incident spread, other parents began asking their daughters if Evans had touched them,

The Utah officer caught on video aggressively arrested nurse for refusing to draw blood from an unconscious patient back in July, was previously disciplined for sexually harassing a female co-worker.
According to the Associated Press, an internal affairs investigations by Salt Lake City police have confirmed allegations that Detective Jeff Payne harassed a fellow employee in a “severe and persistent” way back in 2013. That harassment consisted of unwanted physical contact and a disparaging email.
Payne also faced a vehicle-chase complaint from the Utah Highway Patrol in 1995. That resulted in a two-week suspension without pay, according to records. In that incident, the officer who spent 27 years with the police department “violated the police code of ethics on cooperation with other officers and courtesy toward other agencies,” according to documents.
Payne’s discipline history was released after the Associated Press and other media outlets requested a public-records request.
The nurse who was arrested,

A 23-year-old Oregon woman who was last seen on Saturday was reported missing under unusual circumstances after someone was seen throwing her cell phone from a car in a fast food parking lot, The Oregonian reports.
Demi Helenius had planned to spend a weekend at the self-help conference Landmark Forum, but after she didn’t contact her parents on Saturday night, they called her phone, said Washington County Sgt. David Thompson to The Oregonian.
A Dairy Queen employee answered her phone, telling her parents that a man went through the drive-thru and turned her phone in, Thompson said.
Detectives contacted this man, who said he saw someone throw the phone from a car in the Dairy Queen parking lot.
Helenius’s own car was found nine miles away, with no sign of foul play, Thompson said.
If anyone has any information regarding her whereabouts, they should call 503-846-2500.

A New York elementary school teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges that she sexually abused a student she taught, The Post-Star reported.
Elizabeth Barthelmas, 38, was a fifth grade teacher at the time of the alleged assault, and met the student through one of her classes.
By the time of the alleged sexual relationship, which occurred in 2007 and 2008, the student was no longer in her class, though still younger than 13. Barthelmas allegedly conducted the abuse at her house.
Barthelmas was suspended without pay from Saratoga Springs’ Dorothy Nolan Elementary School after the Saratoga County Sheriff notified the school on Tuesday evening. She was also banned from school district property and functions.
The Times Union reports the sheriff’s office opened their investigation after a tipster told police they believed a teacher had been involved in a sexual relationship with a student.
“The Sheriff’s Office informed the school

Chris Brown may be in legal trouble again. The singer is being investigated in connection with an incident at a Florida nightclub, in which a photographer claims he was “sucker punched,” according to Fox News.
Tampa police spokesman Stephen Hegarty says that photographer Bennie Vines Jr. was hired by the AJA Channelside club at an event hosted by Brown. The photographer claims that when he was taking photos, the singer punched him and left the venue before authorities showed up. Vines refused medical treatment, but said that he is prosecuting over a minor lip cut.
The nightclub has confirmed the incident on its Facebook page. “Incidents like the ones caused by Chris Brown and his team are very sad to see,” it shared. “Assault charges were pressed and we are dealing with the proper authorities accordingly.”
Brown’s reps did not respond to Fox News to comment.
