A white resturant manager in South Carolina is accused of enslaving a black employee. According to the Post-Courier, 52-year-old Bobby Paul Edwards of Lakeside Drive is facing a charge of forced labor for his treatment of Christopher Smith at JJ Cafeteria.
Smith had worked for 23 years at the restaurant. The allegations came to light after state social workers received a tip from someone concerned for his safety. According to prosecutors, Edwards “used force, threats of force, physical restraint and coercion” to get Smith to work. Smith, who has an intellectual disability, was said to work 18-hour shifts six days a week. He often worked without breaks and had been hit with a frying pan, burned with grease-covered tongs and beaten with butcher knives, belt buckles and fists “while being called the N-word repeatedly,” per his lawyers.
His salary was less than $3,000 a year.
Edwards’ lawyer asserts his innocence. If found

Rising rapper Kodak Black is facing up to 30 years in prison on sexual assault charges. As ABC15 reports, the rapper (named Dieuson Octave) has been indicted by a Florence County grand jury on charges of first degree criminal sexual conduct last November in Florence, South Carolina.
According to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, the incident in question says the assault occurred in February while Kodak was performing at the Treasure City nightclub. The 20-year-old Pompano Beach artist is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, who reported the attack to her school nurse in Richland County, at the Comfort Inn and Suites. “According to investigators, on or about February 7, 2016, Octave is alleged to have engaged in the sexual battery of the victim at a hotel located at 2120 West Lucas Street, Florence, SC,” Major Michael M. A Virginia man was arrested on Wednesday after he made online threats to kill students attending Howard University, a historically black college, WJLA reported.
John Edgar Rust, 26, made the racist threats on 4chan and Reddit, two online message boards, on Nov. 11, 2015, the FBI said in an affidavit.
Rust’s screenname on Reddit was “watchouthoward.”
His anonymous 4chan post featured a photo of former University of Missouri president Timothy Wolfe, who resigned after a series of racist incidents on the school’s campus.
“Seriously America why are we still putting up with this s**t?” the post allegedly read. “I mean we might as well just bend over and let the n***ers f**k us right in the ass.”
“So I’ve decided,” the post continues later. “Any n***ers left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be the first to go. And any of those cheapskate n***ers who try to get out using the metro

New details are surfacing about Black Death, the group accused of kidnapping a British model with the purposes of trafficking her online.
Twenty-year-old Chloe Ayling was allegedly abducted and held hostage in Italy after showing up for a fake photo shoot. She was released after six days and spoke out in a statement. According to the New York Daily News, a letter was found on the victim’s computer from the kidnappers that dictated rules for her release, including talking to the media.
The letter claimed Ayling “agreed to sneak a pre-determined set of information into the media” and the kidnappers state, “we will expect to see evidence that has been done in near future,” per British publication The Independent.
The letter reportedly claims the kidnapping, which included Ayling being stuffed into a suitcase and threatened to being sold to men overseas on the Dark Web, was intended to drum up publicity for the group.

In a cringeworthy video released by the Orlando Police Department yesterday, an officer pulls over a black woman for a license plate check—only to quickly try to end the conversation when he learns that the driver is the state attorney.
“What agency are you with?” the officer asks her in the June 19 traffic stop.
“I’m the state attorney” responds Aramis Ayala, Florida’s first black state attorney, who serves as head of the 9th Judicial District.
“All right, thank you,” the officer says quickly, adding that he pulled her over because a check of her license plate came up empty. She then asks why they ran her tag to begin with; he responds that they run tags routinely.
“That’s how we figure out if cars are stolen and that sort of thing,” he says.
“Also, the windows are really dark, I don’t have a tint measure but that’s another reason for the stop,” he adds.

Miss Black Texas 2016 is claiming she was harassed and berated by a North Texas Police Chief who called her a “black b—-,” before being unlawfully detained and arrested.
According to an NBC affiliate in Texas, Carmen Ponder is calling for police accountability and wants charges filed against Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews.
Ponder wrote on her Twitter account that she was driving to a Wal-Mart on Saturday when a truck cut in front of her car. She said the truck was driving erratically. Ponder said she turned on her blinker, pulled around to pass the truck and drove into the Wal-Mart parking lot.
According to Ponder, the truck driver followed her and pulled up next to her in the parking lot. She said the passenger, later identified as Crews, got out of his truck and yelled that he was teaching his 14-year-old daughter how to drive. Crews allegedly told Ponder that

White police officer Betty Shelby shot and killed an unarmed black man named Terance Crutcher following a roadside encounter. After a nine hour deliberation, a jury has acquitted Shelby of felony manslaughter, according to CNN.
Although Shelby’s original testimony, in which she claimed Crutcher’s hands were not visible when she shot him after responding to a call about a man and a car potentially on the verge of an explosion, was directly proven false by video footage. Shelby had also claimed she believed Crutcher to be under the influence of drugs. The jury, made up of three black people and nine white people, asked to explain their decision but were only given a chance to state their conclusion in court.
“This is definitely a tough pill to swallow,” said Terance’s sister, Tiffany Crutcher. “Terence’s hands were up. Terence was not an imminent threat. Terence did not attack her. Terence didn’t

Discussions about the racism of law enforcement have taken a national stage. On a local level, though, conversations about cultural sensitivity and policing remain important. In Hastings, Michigan, the story of a sergeant who learned of his black heritage late in life and then faced racist harassment from his colleagues may just be a microcosm of bigger problems.
The New York Times investigated the situation of Cleon Brown, who had assumed he was part Native American. Brown became more interested in his bloodlines after his daughter was diagnosed at birth for an illness that is more typically found in African-Americans. A DNA test from Ancestry.com showed Brown to have 18% of his genes coming from sub-Saharan Africa. He had no Native American in him at all.

Mr. Clean has been going through some changes. First, there’s this extremely sexual commercial in which is dances erotically with a mop for a woman I assume is a very neglected housewife. This is what I call the Uncanny Horniness Valley:
But there have also been some better updates. For instance, Mr. Clean is now a black man. A human one, not a freaky CGI version of a black Mr. Clean. Ad execs looked for three months to find their new cleaning spokesman in the person of Mike Jackson, a Georgia native who just won $20,000 and a Super Bowl spot next to Denver Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware.
According to People, he also got a lifetime supply of Magic Erasers and will appear in the brand’s digital calendar, if you need something to look at to get motivated to mop the floor. In a press release on his new role,

After stumbling over the legacy of Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump has decided to make some changes to Black History Month. The President-elect apparently just changed the name of the month to National African American History Month.
A senior administration official tells TMZ that Trump finds the term “black” outdated. Apparently, after meeting with African-American leaders, he feels that it’s more appropriate they’re referred to as “African-American.” The official also cites that Trump looked to the Smithsonian for inspiration. Last year, the museum unveiled its completed National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Black History Month was created in 1976. Head to TMZ to see the official letter from The White House declaring the name change. This has also been confirmed via ABC News if you’re just as shocked as I am.
