"Girls Like Us" Takes A Look At The Unsolved Long Island Serial Killer Case

In May 2010, a 911 call from a 24-year-old escort, Shannan Gilbert, sparked a gruesome discovery: a possible serial killer was haunting the Long Island community.

Gilbert had vanished after visiting a high-end client, and her 23-minute-long 911 call led police to assume foul play. But while searching for Gilbert, police instead discovered the bodies of four other sex workers buried in the sand on Jones Beach Island. Gilbert’s remains were found in December in 2011, in addition to several other bodies — there’s thought to be 10 victims so far.

The killer has been dubbed several names, including the “Long Island Serial Killer,” the “Gilgo Beach Killer,” and the “Craiglist Ripper.” This shadowy killer, who has yet to be caught, is the inspiration for author Cristina Alger’s new novel “Girls Like Us.”

The book takes a fictionalized look at the murders through the character Nell Flynn, an FBI agent and

Cosmo DiNardo Takes Plea Deal For Life In Prison, But Cousin Will Face Death Penalty Trial

Confessed spree killer Cosmo DiNardo pleaded guilty Wednesday to the murders of four young men and received a life sentence.

His cousin Sean Kratz, who authorities have alleged to be Dinardo’s accomplice, surprised the court by refusing to accept a plea deal. He will face a death penalty trial, according to prosecutors.

DiNardo confessed to killing former classmate Jimi Patrick, 19, last July because Patrick came up thousands of dollars short in a deal with DiNardo for four pounds of pot. Days later, DiNardo and Kratz allegedly killed three other young men — Dean Finocchiaro, 19; Thomas Meo, 21; and Mark Sturgis, 22 — and then roasted the bodies in a pig cooker on DiNardo’s family farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Kratz is charged in three of four murders.

DiNardo had previously been committed to a psychiatric unit to be treated for schizophrenia, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

During the hearing Wednesday, family members of the victims lashed out

Trump Takes First Step To Train Armed Teachers, Backs Off Raising Age For Buying Semi-Automatic Weapons

Following a growing wave of activism in the wake of a deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, President Trump has offered a series of contradictory and confusing statements about his stance on gun control. In listening sessions with survivors of the shooting, Trump suggested arming teachers as a solution to the problem. Now, he’s taking his first steps to make his proposal a reality — amidst refusals to implement other policy changes.

Trump’s proposal is now in the process of becoming more formalized. Along with programs to train teachers in firearms, Trump plans on bolstering background checks for potential gun owners, expanding mental health programs in schools, and encouraging military and police personnel to become educators, according to NBC.

Conspicuously absent from the plan is an increase in the minimum age required to purchase firearms — an idea the President had breifly considered.

15-Year-Old Viciously Beaten In McDonald’s Bathroom While Another Teen Takes Video

A disturbing video shows a 15-year-old boy backing up into the corner of a McDonald’s bathroom and curling up in a ball on top of a toilet in an attempt to protect himself from the punches of another boy. That video, recorded by another student, has been shared all over Wellington High School in Florida.

“I’m terrified for my kid,” the victim’s mother told WPTV.

In the minute long-clip, the alleged perpetrator, a 17-year-old boy, kicks the bathroom stall open to attack the victim. He then takes his phone only to throw it onto the ground.

“I was furious first of all then I became scared and then it was like disbelief,” the victim’s mother told WPTV. She said her son was followed into the fast food establishment’s bathroom.

According to an NBC affiliate, the victim suffered minor injuries and bruises.

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office stated that a 17-year-old was arrested in

Pregnant Woman Takes Heroin, Passes Out Behind Wheel With 10-Month-Old In Backseat

Police had to pull a pregnant mother from her car after she passed out at a stoplight with a child in the backseat, reported The Miami Herald. According to police, the Evansville, Indiana mom told them she had injected heroin 10 minutes before she conked out. Natalie Onay, 22, is five months pregnant, according to Fox59.

On Monday, police were called after someone noticed Onay passed out behind the steering wheel at an intersection. The driver in the car that was behind Onay said the mother didn’t move, even as the stop light cycled at least two times, according to Fox59. At one point, Onay’s car moved forward before just narrowly escaping being hit by another vehicle. But even that close call didn’t appear to wake Onay up.

In fact, police had to pull her out of the car. Her 10-month-old child, who is now in custody of

Mom Who Takes Terminally Ill Son To See Santa Gets Shamed For …

A Prussia, Pennsylvania mother was shamed for parking in a handicapped parking spot despite having a handicapped hang tag. Nancy Coyne brought her terminally ill 7-year-old son Garrett to a mall to visit Santa Claus. They both returned to the car to see a nasty message scrawled across one of their car’s windows in red lipstick.

“UR Not Handicap [sic]” the note read.

“I can’t believe someone could be so obnoxious and ignorant and rude about a situation that I struggle with daily,” the mother told Fox 29.

Garrett is blind, a side effect of a rare neurological disorder called Batten disease. It’s a condition that typically ends in childhood death.

“There is no cure. There is no treatment,” Nancy told Fox29. “Trying to make memories for my family then this happened. […] It just made me really question society to be honest. Like OK,

Mom Murders 11-Year-Old Daughter, Then Takes 700-Mile, Cross-Country Road Trip With Dead Body In Trunk

A mother has been charged with concealment of a deceased human body after her daughter’s body was found near a highway in West Virginia.

According to the Pocahontas Times, Erica Newsome, of Jacksonville, Florida, struck a guardrail when a couple saw her removing and disposing a body from her car. It belonged to her daughter, 11-year-old Kaye-lea Plummer.

Authorities found the woman and the body of her daughter on a road. “It was obvious that the 11-year-old did not die from injuries from the accident,” State Police Sergeant Herby Barlow said. “Her injuries were non-motor vehicle injuries.”

According to authorities, Newsome told police that she had killed her daughter and was abusive to her.

She shared that the child’s father lived in Buffalo, New York and that’s where she was driving toward. The father says that he hasn’t seen his daughter since 2014 after the couple separated.

“I can’t even wrap my head around what even would have made (my

Accused Rapist Of Student Who Committed Suicide Takes Full-Page Ad Claiming Innocence

The attorney of an Alabama man who was accused of sexual assault by a former University of Alabama student took a full-page out in yesterday’s Tuscaloosa News, claiming that he is innocent and the victim’s text messages prove that any sexual encounter was consensual.

The student, Megan Rondini, killed herself after she told police that T.J. Bunn, 36, raped her at his home. Her parents have since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bunn, as well as two university employees and various members of the Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s office for allegedly mishandling the case.

But Bunn’s lawyer, Ivey Gilmore, claimed that Rondini’s text messages showed that his client was innocent of the rape charge.

“To be clear, this case is not a matter of ‘he said, she said,”’ Gilmore wrote. “It is this young woman’s own words, and her own text messages that led every investigating authority to conclude she had not

NBCU takes on ID as Oxygen retools as crime net

Factual-header

Frances BerwickNBCUniversal is repositioning female-focused US cable channel Oxygen as a crime-themed network, putting it in direct competition with Investigation Discovery.

The new look network will target true crime-hungry female audiences, which are mainly served in the US by Discovery Communications’ thematic ID channel.

The reposition comes after Oxygen expanded its ‘Crime Time’ block to four days a week (Friday-Monday), which according to NBCU Cable Entertainment president of lifestyle network Frances Berwick has led to “double-digital gains”.

According to Variety, no staff changes are expected as a result of the changes.

To go with the rebrand, NBCU has given the greenlight to a new Dick Wolf series, Cold Justice, and Glass Entertainment Group-produced The Jury Speaks, both of which will debut in the third quarter of 2017.

A full crime slate will be in place by the
