A woman whose mother and stepfather were allegedly bludgeoned to death in 1980 by the Golden State Killer faced the suspect for the first time in a Sacramento court Monday.
Jennifer Carole told ABC News that alleged serial killer Joseph DeAngelo “looked just like an old man.”
“From his orange Crocs to his orange outfit, his shoulders are sagging, he had whiskers on his face,” she said.
But as feeble as the 72-year-old DeAngelo appeared, Carole said she believes there is evil under his surface.
“He looked incredibly ordinary, which I think is the part that all of us are struggling with,” she said, referring to the families of other victims. “From the outside, he looks particularly ordinary and yet we know on the inside there’s a monster there.”
DeAngelo was arrested last month and has been charged with 12 murders across California from the 1970s and 1980s, including Charlene and Lyman Smith, Carole’s parents.
